Kari Ikonen (b.1973) has a Master of Music degree from the Sibelius-Academy Jazz Department. He has also studied at the Jyväskylä Music Institute and the Rotterdam Conservatory in Holland. In addition to his own ensemble Karikko he plays in groups Ahava, Gnomus, Kolhoz, Markus Holkko Quartet and SLO Motive, performing frequently in Finland and abroad. He has performed with many internationally known musicians, such as Ingrid Jensen, Bob Moses, Ron McClure, Vincent Courtois, Magnus Broo, Dayna Stephens, Raoul Björkenheim and Jukkis Uotila. Ikonen has performed in the USA, Russia, Armenia and 21 European countries. Ikonen’s playing and/or compositions can be heard on more than 30 records.
Ikonen has composed a lot of music for different small groups and larger ensembles, e.g. UMO Jazz Orchestra and The Norwegian Radio Orchestra. In 2000 he won the first prize at the International Julius Hemphill Composition Awards (Jazz Composers Alliance, USA). His debut-cd ”Karikko”, consisting of his compositions for different ensembles, was chosen as the best Finnish jazz-cd of 2001 by the ”Jazz-Emma” prize (Finland’s Grammy) and in 2002 he won the first prize in the ”Scrivere in Jazz” big band composition contest in Italy.
Ikonen works as a part-time professor at the jazz departments of the Sibelius-Academy in Helsinki and at Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre in Tallinn.
Markku Ounaskari (b.1967). Among the most reliable and versatile Finnish drummers, Markku Ounaskari has been in high demand in Finnish jazz circles since the late 80's. Beginning of the 90's he recorded and toured with two legendary local jazz units, Piirpauke and the Pekka Pohjola Group. Markku is featured on Piirpauke's "Algazara" and "Serenade" and Pohjola's "Changing Waters".
Later on in the 90's, pianist Jarmo Savolainen's Trio has made several tours in Europe including the big Jazz festivals. The trio has also made four recordings for a Dutch label (A-records). Soon followed a number of groups and projects (MMQ Mika Mylläri Quintet, Jukka Gustavson Band, Seppo Kantonen Klang, Antero Priha Breadmachine, Otto Donner Band, Uffe Krokfors&, Iro Haarla Band, Sonny Heinilä Trio etc). In 1999 he started to work more with international projects and bands, such as Eric Vloeimans Band, Sinikka Langeland Ensemble, Fredrik Nordström &, Niklas Winter Band, Willemark-Heinilä-Ounaskari-Jormin Band, Stefano Battaglia Quartet,
Iro Haarla Quintet, Walter Beltrami Quartet. He collaborates regularly with artists such as Arve Henriksen, Trygve Seim and Anders Jormin and he is ECM recording artist. His CD "Kuara" won the Finnish Grammy for the best jazz release of the year 2010.
At the present he is touring with these bands all over the Scandinavia and Europe as well as performing in Finland. He has also toured and played with many jazz legends among others, Lee Konitz, Rick Margitza, Tim Hagans, Tomasz Stanko, Kenny Wheeler, Ron Mc Clure, Ray Anderson, Ed Jones, Furio di Castri, Hein Van De Geyn, Judy Niemack, Per Jørgensen, Marc Ducret, Vertavo String quartet.
